Teen Volunteers
NEW THIS FALL:
ALL teens interested in becoming a session volunteer MUST attend an orientation (with a guardian) BEFORE filling out a teen volunteer application.
Please register for an orientation session on our event calendar.
Session Volunteers
We take on new volunteers twice each year: once as the school year closes (mid-May to June) and again as school begins (mid-August to September). During the school year, we accept students in grades 8-12. In the summer, we accept students who will be in grades 8-12 in the fall. Our school year application typically opens in August. The summer application will open in May.
South Fayette Township Library has many opportunities for teens to volunteer:
Program Assistants, Upkeep Attendants and In-library Assistants (temporarily unavailable). These opportunities are part of a program designed to foster a teen’s growth and independence and prepare them to join the workforce.
Interested teens are required to attend an orientation and fill out an application. Interested teens and one guardian will attend one of our scheduled orientation sessions that will explain the expectations, guidelines, and benefits of our volunteer program. After the orientation, each teen who feels the library is the right fit for their volunteering will be given directions on how to submit their application.
Please use our Library Events Calendar to register for one of our mandatory orientation sessions.
Teen Program Assistants
Would you be interested in assisting with our library programs?
Program Volunteers help before, during and after library programs with tasks like:
- helping set up and clean up for the program
- assisting children with basic tasks, like cutting or gluing for a craft
- assisting children with activities offered during the program
- interacting with program participants
Program Assistants are sent an email each month detailing upcoming opportunities for volunteering. These emails include the dates and times of the volunteer sessions, plus information about the types of tasks required. Program Assistants review and request the chance to volunteer for any sessions that will work best with their schedules. Before the beginning of next month, Program Assistants receive an email detailing which sessions they have been assigned.
Teen Program Assistants need to REGULARLY check their email for updates! Teens will NOT be scheduled for any programs without reviewing and submitting the monthly form indicating their availability and interest in volunteering for programs.
Please use our Library Events Calendar to register for one of our mandatory orientation sessions.
NEW THIS FALL:
Teen Upkeep Attendants
Upkeep Attendants regularly help with:
- tidying up programming room
- disinfecting programming materials between programs
- organizing library areas
- cleaning materials frequently used in programs
Upkeep Attendants are scheduled for a consistent 30 minute shift every other week for 2 months, based on their availability.
Upkeep Attendants are sent an email every other month. These emails include the dates and times slots available for those 2 months. Upkeep Attendants review and request the chance to volunteer for the block of sessions that will work best with their schedules. Before the beginning of next month, Upkeep Attendants receive an email detailing which sessions they have been assigned. Teen Upkeep Attendants need to REGULARLY check their email for updates! Teens will NOT be scheduled for without reviewing and submitting the form indicating their availability and interest in volunteering.
Please use our Library Events Calendar to register for one of our mandatory orientation sessions.
Teen In-Library Assistants
Due to the Library’s temporary location, we will not be taking on In-Library Assistants this Fall.
In-Library Assistants MUST volunteer as either a member of TAB or be a Program Volunteer for a previous session prior to being selected for this opportunity.
In Library Assistants regularly help with:
- pulling library materials for patron holds
- searching shelves for materials on other reports
- shelving books and other items returned to the library
- cleaning toys from the Children’s area
In-Library Assistants are scheduled for a consistent 1 hour shift each week based on their availability.
PLEASE NOTE: We have a very limited number of time slots available for In Library volunteers, so very few who apply will be selected.
Due to the Library’s temporary location, we will not be taking on In-Library Assistants this Fall.
TEENS WHO ARE NOT MEMBERS OF OUR REGULAR SESSION VOLUNTEERS OR ARE LOOKING FOR ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITES MAY BE INTERESTED IN:
Teen Power Hours
Available during the school year, students in 7th grade and above can sign up to volunteer during a two-hour time block each month.
This fall, these sessions will be held on the third Saturday of each month, from 2pm-4pm. Those who volunteer during this program help with a wide variety of library tasks ranging from dusting and cleaning to preparing materials for upcoming programs. Participants are not required to be present for the entire 2 hours but are asked to volunteer for a minimum of 30 minutes.
When available, registration for upcoming Teen Power Hours will be listed on our Event Calendar.
Teen Advisory Board
The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) has the important role of representing the voice of our teen communities and helping to provide an enjoyable experience for teen patrons at our libraries. TAB is made up of teens from both Bridgeville Public Library and South Fayette Township Library.
TAB helps to curate Teen Unseen Bags, create program ideas for teens, and (hopefully) lead a teen program throughout the School Year and Summer. The Teen Advisory Board members will receive volunteer hours (we will send an official confirmation of those volunteer hours via email).
We hold regular meetings on the first and third Fridays of each month. The first meetings of the month are virtual; where we’ll make decisions for the Teen Unseen Bags. The second meetings are in person at either South Fayette Township Library OR Bridgeville Public Library for program planning and projects.
TAB members must be in 8th -12th grades (or entering these grades in the fall when applying in summer), available and willing to attend meetings on a regular basis, and invested in contributing toward the goals of TAB.
TAB members also have the possibility of taking on leadership roles within the Teen Advisory Board. TAB members in leadership roles take on additional responsibilities, which may lead to additional tasks and volunteer hours outside of the regular meeting times.
Adult Volunteers
Thank you for your interest, adult volunteer opportunities are currently unavailable.
