TikTok at the Library

Did you know that you can follow the library on TikTok? The libraries’ TikTok is a result of feedback from the teen volunteer program. One of the teens suggested creating TikToks as an opportunity in which they would like to participate. This suggestion was made into a reality in October of 2021.

We talked to Youth Services Specialist, Carrie Lowery, and Bridgeville Public Library’s Circulation Supervisor, Bree Balsamo-Carilli, to learn more about the program.

Who creates the content?

Bree: Currently, the main source of the content is Carrie and me, with some of the teens helping as well. We’ve had a few teens create some fun videos for the library. My favorite is the rating of the strange bookmarks.

What is the teens’ role?

Carrie: The teens are helping us figure out the right rules/guidelines that should be used to create TikToks. Some of the teens also film and edit the videos themselves. We also have two awesome teen managers who help give suggestions and feedback to the teens after they make a TikTok.

What was the goal of having a library TikTok?

Bree: TikTok can fulfill so many goals. It not only involves the teens with a platform that they either use, or have friends that use it, but the library can use it to advocate, share our teen collection, and give people a behind-the-scenes look at the library. One of my favorite ways that we can use TikTok is to connect to authors. At the end of 2021, we highlighted the top ten circulated YA books at both libraries and one of the authors shouted out our video.

Carrie: We want teens to feel like the library is a space for them and that they are contributing to the library in a significant way. We also want teens to have fun volunteering at the library, and we thought that this would be a good way of doing that.

How can people access the library’s TikTok?

They can find us on the TikTok app by searching our username @sfbglibraryteens. We also have some of our TikToks on Instagram which are available on our reels (@bridgevillebpl and @sfayettelibrary).
